na mesma semana em que alunos brutamontes de uma universidade desastrada trouxeram a tona o direito das mulheres de fazer da vida delas o que bem entender, a colega juliana m. puxou minha orelha, e com razão.

depois de escrever 3 posts sobre a invisibilidade das mulheres arquitetas eu organizei uma exposição de arquitetura mineira na coréia e lá constavam apenas 2 moças entre 14 rapazes.

o problema é sério. O trabalho das mulheres tende a ser invisível e é preciso esforço para mudar esse quadro. No meu caso, deliberadamente tentei encontrar obras projetadas por mulheres em Minas e discutí várias vezes, comigo mesmo e com colegas, se cromossomos XX ou XY era critério válido para a seleção.

acho que dá pra concordar que da mesma forma que é absurdo excluir por causa do gênero também não se justifica escolher alguém pelo mesmo motivo apenas. Mas como nas boas políticas de inclusão, é importante estar atento para a questão, no nosso caso buscar dar visibilidade a mulheres arquitetas e seus trabalhos excepcionais.

então aqui vai minha contribuição nesse sentido. Não ví nada da grande mídia brasileira (o que comprova minha tese da invisibilidade) mas nas últimas semanas a Profa. Raquel Rolnik, da FAUUSP, esteve viajando pelos EUA como observadora da ONU, com a missão de entender o problema habitacional deste que é o país mais rico do planeta. As conclusões (bem como a hostilidade de parte da imprensa Americana) são estarrecedoras.

in the same week when hooligans in a second-rate university in São Paulo brought to the forefront the old issue of women’s right to do whatever they want with their bodies my blog colleague Juliana M blasted me, and for a reason.

after writing 3 posts on the invisibility of women architects I organized an exhibition of Brazilian architecture in Korea with only 2 young women and 14 men consisted. The issue is serious to me and if the work of women tend to be invisible we need to make an extra effort to change this picture. In this case I deliberately tried to find exemplary designs by women architects of Minas Gerais and discussed with others if chromosomes XX or XY were valid criterion for the selection. I think we can agree that in the same way that is nonsense to exclude somebody because of gender it is also not the best idea to choose someone for gender reasons only.

but as in the best affirmative action polocies it is important to be aware of the issue, in our case to make visibility the fantastic work of many women architects.

so here is my contribution in this direction: the big Brazilian media did not report but in the last 3 weeks Prof. Raquel Rolnik from the University of São Paulo School of Architecture was travelling around the U.S.A. as observer to the UN, to report on the striking housing troubles of the richest society in our planet.

the conclusions (as well as the hostility of part of the American press) are scary.

desigualdade de gênero pela última vez - last post on gender inequality

andei escrevendo aqui no parede sobre desigualdade de gênero, sobre a importância de discutir isso com as alunas de arquitetura, que são não apenas maioria numérica como também invariavelmente melhores ultimamente.

como pai de duas meninas me preocupa muito observar que a sociedade (eu, você, nós todos) incentivamos os meninos a serem sempre vocais e visíveis e subliminarmente incentivamos as meninas a não serem tão vocais nem tão visíveis.

mas a julgar pela caixa de comentários desse blog que registrou 27 colocações masculinas contra 2 femininas nos últimos dois posts, há de se concluir que:

ou o assunto é absolutamente desinteressante para as leitoras do sexo feminino,

ou a conformidade é tanta que desestimula até comentários num blog menor.

de qualquer forma continuo inquieto

I have been writing here about gender inequality and the importance of discussing this with female students of architecture whom are not only the numerical majority but invariably the best in class lately.

as a father of two girls it worries me that society (me, you, we all) stimulates the boys to be always vocal and visible and subconsciously tells the girls to be not so vocal and not so visible.

but judging from the commentaries in this blog which registered 27 masculine entries and only 2 feminine ones in last the two weeks, I might conclude that:

the subject is absolutely uninteresting for the female readers

or the level of conformity is such that it discourages them from even commenting in a minor blog.

either way I am still uneasy

ainda sobre elas - still about women

na semana passada escrevi sobre um tema que me parece atualíssimo e importantíssimo: o fato da arquitetura formar uma maioria absoluta de mulheres e ter entre seus profissionais mais reconhecidos quase que apenas homens.

apenas dois leitores se manifestaram, ambos homens por incrível que pareça.

então aqui vai a guisa de provocação uma lista de mulheres arquitetas excepcionais para que ninguém nunca mais engasgue e fique contando nos dedos quando perguntado sobre as arquitetas de destaque.

ou será que as leitoras desse blog vão ficar quietas diante dessa resposta infame do Robert Stern (diretor da escola de Yale, imagine!!!) sobre o assunto:

last week I wrote about what I consider to be a very contemporary and important problem: the fact that in archietcture we now graduate a mojority of women but there are so few of them among the most famous architects.

only two readers commented anything, both male. So here goes a list as provocation: exceptional women architects links provided so that nobody gasps the next times he or she is asked about the best female architects.

or will the female readers of this blog agree with this infamous answer by Robert Stern when asked about this issue?

o seculo delas - her century

Nicholas Kristof é um dos meus jornalistas favoritos no New York Times. Na semana passada, mais precisamente no domingo dia 23/8, a revista daquele jornal foi editada por ele e Sheryl WuDunn, e teve como tema a desiguadade de gênero.

segundo Kristof, se o século 19 teve como marca a luta contra a escravidão e o século passado a luta pela democracia, este século precisa assumir como causa maior a luta pelos direitos das mulheres.

alguns números são assustadores:

100 milhões de mulheres estão desaparecidas hoje no mundo, presas em casa, vendidas ou simplesmente assasinadas. É um número maior que o total de mortos em todas as guerras dos últimos 100 anos.

apenas 1% das proprietárias rurais no mundo todo são mulheres

em todo o mundo desenvolvido (o Brasil incluído) as meninas tem em média mais educação formal que os meninos. Mal aproveitadas num mercado de trabalho ainda machista, isto significa um desperdício de talento de proporções fenomenais.

isso me faz pensar na participação das mulheres na nossa profissão. Apesar de serem maioria nas escolas de arquitetura, são ainda poucas as que ocupam posições de liderança ou de destaque. Nossos clientes infelizmente ainda procuram uma arquiteta para reformar a cozinha e um arquiteto para construir o prédio novo.

quando é que vamos mudar isso e utilizar melhor o talento dessas milhares de arquitetas?

Nicholas Kristof is one of my favorite journalists at the New York Times. Last week the NYT magazine was edited by him and Sheryl WuDunn, and had as main subject the issue of gender inequality.

according to Kristof the 19^th century was about the fight against slavery, the 20th century about the fight for democracy and this century will be about the fight for women rights.

some numbers are frightful: 100 million women are missing today in the world, more that the total number of people who died in all wars of last the 100 years.

only 1% of landowners in the world all are women

in the all the developed world girls have more formal education in average than boys, but in a sexist labor force they are still far from their full potential.

that makes me think about women in our profession. Despite being the majority in most architecture schools, there are very few leading the profession. Our clients unfortunately still look a female architect to remodel the kitchen and a male architect to construct the new building.

when is that going to change and we will better utilize the talent of all architects?
