the book that I am reading this week with great enthusiasm is Descartes Bones in which the author tracks the separation between religion and science following the path of the bones and the ideas of Rene Descartes after his death in 1650.
superficially speaking, Descartes established modern science with his method of questioning absolutely everything. In the end of the rope it was the unquestioned premise that “I exist”, the classic cogito ergo sum.
the influence of his thoughts dominated science for centuries but is slowly vanishing. Especially in terms of the separation between body and mind that we know today to be intrinsically interdependent.
so my cartesian thought of the week is: an idea can exist in your mind as an abstraction but it does not materialize itself in the real world until it is sketched in some form. A separation mind/matter that still holds true in design.
the fact of Descartes also invented the analytical geometry, basic foundation of the design process developed by the French academy that we still use allows me to think of architects (and for that matter any design professional) as the last cartesians.
since tomorrow I will be flying to the Projetar conference in São Paulo I will spend the rest of the week with some of my dearest cartesian friends.
